Meet Sydney Leonard.
Sydney Leonard, 5 of Clifton Park has a bright smile and undeniable spirit that often lights up a room and everyone around her.
However, Sydney was 3 ½ years old when her mother, Malinda, found a worrisome lump on her abdomen. Concerned, Malinda and Sydney went to her pediatrician for further examination.
Their Doctor told them to immediately take Sydney to Albany Med’s Emergency Department for further testing. There, Doctors delivered the devistating news that Sydney had cancer. Diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms Tumor, Doctors removed her diseased right kidney.
Within days Sydney began 13 grueling days of radiation treatments at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers and Blood Disorders at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. For the next 9 months, she would undergo chemotherapy treatments but remained upbeat and positive.
She has since finished all treatment in April 2019 with a clean bill of health and in November 2019 retuned back to preschool. She also had the trip of a lifetime where Make a Wish sent her and her family to Orlando, Florida for a week in June. Sydney met all of her favorite Disney princesses and went to Disneyworld for the first time! She has a new zest and love for life as does the rest of her family and their family would like to thank Make a Wish and the staff at Albany Medical Center for all their generosity, love and support through this tough process.
