Meet our Honorary Captain – Carter.
Carter David Jappa was born July 1st, 2019, weighing just 14 ounces and was 9.5 inches long. He was born 12-weeks early due to IUGR (Intrauterine growth restriction).
Carter was in Albany Medical Center’s NICU for 9 months then transferred to Albany Medical Center’s PICU for another 8 months. All told, Carter spent the first 17 months of his life inside those hospital walls.
There were multiple times Carters body gave up due to his Pulmonary Hypertension and Chronic Lung Disease, but Carter did not, he fought, and his family was by his side, caring and advocating for him each step of the way.
Carter had multiple surgeries on October 31, 2019. This is the day Carter received his trach and GJ tube. With these uncertain prognoses and future, he continued to fight and began making progress.
Slowly, he miraculously started doing things he needed to do to be discharged home to his parents. Carter went home on December 14, 2020. He required a feeding tube and was trach and vent dependent.
With the help of Building on Love, Carter and his family were able to keep up on essential bills and household supplies that were needed for Carter.
Carter now weighs 29.8 lbs. and is doing great. He is their miracle baby indeed.
Little update: he’s doing amazing; Carter receives therapies multiple times a week, at home, and attends a school setting two times a week at Whispering Pines Preschool. Carter loves to play with his brother Anthony. Carter loves being silly and he is definitely a thrill seeker!!! Since being home Carter has been thriving. He walks with assistance, sits up independently and loves trying tastes of new foods. love having him home.
