Meet our Honorary Captain – Arianna.
15-year-old Arianna began feeling back pain in September of 2023. The school doctor and family doctor initially thought it was scoliosis and scheduled her for an appointment in December with a local bone & joint practice. They suggested Arianna’s mom treat any pain with Salonpas patches. However, Arianna began having what was thought to be balance issues, and then fell at school, As Arianna was getting ready for school the next day, she fell again at home. Her mom (brought her to their family doctors. After scans showed a mass on her spine, they sent them to Albany Medical Center.
AMC doctors told Arianna’s mom that she needed to have surgery as soon as possible to remove the tumor. The surgeons were able to remove most of the tumor, but because it was wrapped around her spine, they could not remove it all.
While they knew it was cancerous, they did not know the official diagnosis. Numerous tests came back negative. At Arianna’s mom’s urging, they engaged with Sloane Kettering. And it was Sloane doctors that determined she has Desmoplastic small round cell tumors – a very rare form of cancer and one hardly ever found in 14-year-old females. Sloane is coordinating her care with the team at AMC.
Arianna recently completed 12 weeks of chemotherapy. The hope is that it will eradicate the remaining cancer.
