Meet our Honorary Captain – Landon Groves
Landon Groves was born on 9/4/2019 with immediate respiratory and feeding complications. He remained at Albany Medical Center NICU for 30+ days until he received his G-tube feeding button and was stable enough to go home. Landon being the youngest of five, had many people surrounding him with love.
The Albany genetics department noticed many challenges with Landon and did a wide range of genetic testing. By the age of three months the family had a full diagnosis for Landon, Kabuki Syndrome. This syndrome is a rare syndrome effecting Landon’s over all immune system, failure to thrive and cleft pallet. Landon remained very sick for the first year with numerous stays at AMC for reoccurring respiratory illnesses.
By the age of one Landon was getting extremely ill with complete confusion as to why. On 11/20/2020 he was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, B cell. Treatment began immediately.
Landon has responded to treatment, but the overall infections were catastrophic to his lungs and overall health. Chemotherapy caused a mass stricture that is a collection of cells that closed off his mid esophagus. Putting a lot of pressure on Landon’s already weakened airway. He wasn’t able to swallow. He spent years in Albany Medical PICU until finally he was stable enough to seek treatment with Boston Children’s Airway and esophageal team.
September 29,2022 Landon received a complete esophageal reconstruction and an upper airway repair. A 13-hour surgery with months of recovery with mom staying by his side in Boston. Landon healed extremely well and spent Christmas with his family.
Landon continued treatment in Boston where the doctors focused on healing his airway. The Melodie’s Center at AMC continued to treat his Leukemia and he was declared cancer free in early 2024.
Landon’s family was introduced to Building on Love in early 2021. The 2023 Mites Mania Capital Cup for Kids event was dedicated to Landon as well.
